Steffågarden on Ona

Steffågarden, built in 1793, is a coastal croft house, meaning a house without its own land or plot, akin to a tenant farmer's cottage in the coastal region. The house is typical of the architectural style of the islands in Romsdal and is furnished to illustrate the living conditions of a fishing family.

During the summer, the house is open every day.

There is no entry fee to Steffågarden. You can purchase a guided tour of the farm and the island.

Ona is located in the open sea west of Molde. To get there, you must use your own boat or take a bus/ferry. Essentially, it consists of two islands connected by a small bridge: Ona and Husøy. Here, in the open sea, lies Steffågarden – a small coastal croft home, typical of the islands along the coast of Romsdal.

Years ago, all the houses on the island were inhabited. On Husøya, there were two farms, and on Ona, there were fish receptions. Today, there is no farming or fish receptions, leading to depopulation on Ona. Now, there are 15 permanent residents on the two islands. The school closed in 1998, with only one student attending at the time. However, when spring and summer arrive, activity resumes in almost every house.
