In Kristiansund, you’ll find Norways oldest Opera! That opera has been played here on these islands at the far end of the oceans gap in Northwestern Norway since 1928 is truly remarkable.

The clipfish town Kristiansund
In the 1800’s, Kristiansund was in the forefront in the production and export of klipfish, and while the dried and salted fish was sent throughout Europe, the people of Kristiansund brought culture back to the city. One of these was the grandiose theatrical form, Opera!
The oldest opera in Norway
The opera in Kristiansund was established in 1928, which makes it Norway's oldest opera, and around 150 small and large performances are staged every year.
In addition to the year-round programme, the Opera in Kristiansund organizes "Operafestukene", an Opera-festival every year in February. The festival was established in 1971 and has since been an annual event in Kristiansund.
