A Musical Drama for Children, by Erik Waldejer
The story unfolds in a grandfather’s woodworking shed and garden. Louis, one of the main characters, has convinced his grandfather to try and catch a bird.

Catching a bird takes both patience and effort — but what do you do if you actually manage to catch one? A living wild sparrow, small enough to hold in your hands!

Throughout the story, the grandfather’s patience — and the bond between him and Louis — is put to the test, all leading to a very special ending.

The music adds drama, depth and emotion to the narrative. It paints the story of a close and warm relationship between a boy and an old man, while also reflecting on the theme of capturing a bird (or an animal) and holding it in captivity.

The orchestration, with its rich tonal colours and melodic parts, creates moments that are thrilling, eerie, and cosy. The thoughts of the sparrow are beautifully portrayed by a boy soprano.

The work was composed especially for the Stavanger Chamber Music Festival and is dedicated to the ensemble Insimul.

Narrator and actor Torbjørn Berglund Eriksen guides us through the story.

The piece offers an excellent starting point for conversations not just about music, but also about animals and birds — in freedom and captivity.

It is suitable for children aged 4–8 — and for adults.
