Edvard Hoem discusses his four emigrant novels: Slåttekar i himmelen, Bror din på prærien, Land ingen har sett, and Liv andre har levd. This year marks 200 years since the first emigrant ship departed from Stavanger.

Approximately 800,000 Norwegian men, women, and children left the country between then and 1930—more than half of the total population at the time.

Hoem focuses on the story of his granduncle, Eilert Knudtson (1876–1959), who emigrated from Norway at the age of 16, first settling in the Midwest before becoming a farmer in Canada. He reflects on what remains of Norwegian America 200 years later.

Organised in connection with the bicentennial of Norwegian emigration to North America.

Supported by Fritt Ord.
