Josephine Foster from Colorado is known as a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. She is renowned for bringing old music forms back to life and channels the essence of Harry Smith’s "old, weird America" with her vibrant mezzo-soprano voice and imaginative artistry, something she has demonstrated through nearly two decades of self-produced recordings.
Anachronism – as a bridge between different eras – creates a sense of eternity, a concept Foster embodies in her unique catalogue. Her musical journey began in the mountainous West of the USA, where, at just 15 years old, she performed hymns in a church. Despite a stage presence marked by quiet restraint, her distinctive voice radiates a paradoxical blend of rustic charm and ethereal elegance.
In her twenties, Foster immersed herself in Chicago’s experimental rock and free jazz scene. A transatlantic move followed, and she spent over a decade in the Spanish countryside, further developing her artistry. Later stints in Nashville's recording studios contributed to her productive career, which includes a rich catalogue of solo and group albums. Both on stage and in the studio, she has led various ensembles worldwide.
Foster's artistic expression draws inspiration from timeless, spiritual sources, and her performances are hypnotic and dreamlike. Her voice seamlessly merges with the instruments—guitar, piano, harp, and autoharp—creating folk-inspired songs with intricate arrangements. Though she is often drawn to piano and organ, she adapts effortlessly to any guitar within reach, adding spontaneity and playfulness to her musical expression.
