Kapittel, Stavanger International Festival for Literature and Freedom of Speech, is an annual festival organised every September by Sølvberget. Kapittel is among Norway’s largest literary festivals, attracting big names from Norway and abroad. Agnes Ravatn, Jo Nesbø, Maja Lunde, Linn Skåber, Tønes, Nina Lykke, Trude Marstein, Kjartan Fløgstad, Geoff Dyer, Helene Uri, Marlene van Niekerk, Mimir Kristjansson and Skambankt were among the guests in 2019.
Kapittel maintains a strong focus on social issues and the concept of freedom of expression permeates the whole programme. The International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) and the new Kielland Centre are both located at Sølvberget and are among the festival’s most important partners, along with a number of other cultural stakeholders in the region.
At the same time, the festival is one of Norway’s most important venues for Norwegian and international fiction. The festival also has a tradition of dedicating plenty of room to poetry and Illustrated literature in the programme, along with other artistic expressions such as theatre, dance, art and music. Kapittel is characterised by a broad literary view and conveys knowledge and literary experiences to children, young people and adults.
