Maijazz 2020: Håker Flaten & Nilssen Love Guts and Skins Octet

Overview

NTNU Jazzlinja in Trondheim celebrated 40 years in 2019, and in this connection bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love were asked to make an anniversary invitation during the Trondheim Jazz Festival. For various reasons, the project was postponed for one year. But in May 2020, the project becomes a reality and a grand anniversary celebration tour rolls across the country.

Two of the country's most active and award-winning musicians have put together a band, Guts and Skins Octet, which shows what a wide range NTNU Jazzlinja has characterized Norwegian music scene since its creation in 1979. Both Håker Flaten and Nilssen-Love have both studied in Trondheim, however in each litter, from the early 1990s. The bassist and drummer had a handful of bands going on before they together established several bands that would dominate jazz nationally and internationally for a long time, including: Element, Atomic, San, School Days, The Thing, and the Scorch trio. Through these groups, the duo established themselves as one of Norway's heaviest rhythm sections, with Atomic and The Thing as spearheads for further careers.

Nilssen-Love is no longer part of Atomic, and The Thing is on ice. Thus, there was no doubt that the radar couple had to put together their own new band on this occasion. The members of Guts and Skins Octet are musicians Paal and Ingebrigt have played with, or have long wanted to play with, and the instrumentation has also become a bit unusual. The music is composed by these two gentlemen, but is open enough for all members to take the music in their directions. The keywords here are high energy level and wild play fun!
