Meditations on Listening – a Creative Exploration of the Role of the Conductor by Halldis Rønning, PhD candidate at the Faculty of Performing Arts at the University of Stavanger

Rønning works with listening as an expanded concept. Listening as presence, as balance in communication and exchange, as an artistic quality, and as an artistic process. Her conducting practice involves auditory listening, but also other forms of listening—bodily, spatial, visual, imaginative, and relational. She seeks to open up the traditional role of the conductor, both through her own creations and in collaboration with others.

Rønning also aims to contribute to a broader understanding of what conducting can be. Can conducting be conceptual art? Can it be performance or dance?

Through her art, she explores themes such as mutual exchange, creative space, agency and control—as well as the conducting body as expression and experiential register in interaction with nature or with an orchestra.

The concert is a result of Rønning’s artistic research in conducting at the Faculty of Performing Arts at the University of Stavanger and is performed in collaboration with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. The concert is curated by Rønning and features newly composed works by Maja S. Ratkje, Hilmar Thordarson, and Halldis Rønning, works by Arvo Pärt and Pauline Hall, as well as video art by Anne-Marthe Dyvi and Thorbjörg Jonsdottir.
