Olivier Messiaen is considered by many as the greatest organ composer after Bach.

With inspiration from sources as diverse as birdsong, Indian rhythms, stained glass windows and religious mysticism, he developed his own universe of sound that never ceases to appeal. 110 years after Messiaen’s birth, the Stavanger Concert Hall will present his complete organ works, all in one day.

The music will be performed by 8 organists:  Jennifer Bate (UK), Thomas Ospital (FR), Lidia Ksiazkiewicz (PL/FR), Kåre Nordstoga (NO), Thomas Lacôte (FR) Nils Henrik Asheim (NO), James McVinnie (UK) and Colin Mark Andrews (UK/USA).

Such a “Messiaen minute by minute” concept has never been presented before. This will be a historical happening giving you a unique opportunity to dive into a life’s work created between 1928 and 1984. We hope to offer you an experience spanning from the dramatically intense to the heavenly meditative.

The concert takes place in two rooms simultaneously. The music is played live on the organ in Fartein Valen (orchestra hall), where the audience will sit down as in a normal concert. The sound will be transferred to Zetlitz (black box hall) with a lounge area, where you can move around, sit or lay down. This way you can customize your own experience of the music. Video projection and light design will colour the event in both venues, inspired by Messiaen’s strong relationship to visual impulses.

Your ticket to this nine hour marathon event will allow you to move freely between the venues during the evening.
