Mitt Stavanger - the story behind
The four-masted full rigger ‘Norrøna’ that sits in the Mitt Stavanger exhibition is a bit of a mystery. The ship may never have existed in reality, but someone still built this vision: An exact miniature of a magnificent vessel that would have overshadowed all others in the Stavanger fleet, at the very end of the ‘white sail’ era. The model becomes an entry point for discussing Stavanger's maritime history at the end of the 19th century: What does this broken dream tell us about seafaring, urban development and the lives of high and low in the late 1800s? Anne Tove Austbø is a curator at Stavanger Maritime Museum and head of the Urban History Association - Stavanger. The ship model Norrøna is on display in the exhibition My Stavanger at Stavanger Museum. After the lecture, curator Mette Tveit will show you around the 19th century room in the exhibition on the museum's 3rd floor. The lecture is held in Fuglesalen at Stavanger Museum.
