In 2013, this vision became a reality when Stavanger welcomed the world's best players. Since then, they have returned every year. Today, Norway Chess stands as one of the world's most prestigious and renowned chess tournaments. Each year, Stavanger plays host to the chess elite, drawing players to this action-packed tournament. For many, it's the highlight of their competitive calendar. Through Norway Chess, Stavanger has gained its status as a global chess hub.

Norway Chess 2024 is just around the corner and will take place in Finansparken in Stavanger, from 27th May to 7th June. As in previous years, the very top world elite in chess is invited to the tournament. This marks the tournament's 12th edition, and fans can expect to see renowned players like Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and world champion Ding Liren.

Making history with gender equality in chess

This year's event is historic as Norway Chess pioneers the world's first gender-equal tournament for elite female chess players. Women's world champion Ju Wenjun, Anna Muzychuk, and other top female players will compete alongside their male counterparts in the same arena, with equal prize money and format. This is a significant step aims to provide greater opportunities for female players and inspire women in chess.

In addition to the main tournament in Finansparken, Norway Chess offers several side events; Norway Open from 24th to 30th May at Clarion Energy Hotel, a Park Chess Tournament for middle schools on 31st May in Bjergstedparken, and the business conference, Norway Summit, on 5th June at Fiskepiren.

Guinness World Record during Norway Chess?

From Sunday 2nd to Tuesday 4th June, podcasters and chess experts Askild Bryn and Odin Blikra Vea will try to set a crazy Guinness World Record. The goal is to play blitz chess against each other for 61 hours straight. The match will take place in Stavanger while the world's best chess players, including Magnus Carlsen, compete in the prestigious Norway Chess tournament.

This is a unique record attempt that is both about cooperation and competition at the same time. It is important to beat the record together, while there will be an intense and exciting battle between Askild and Odin.
