21:00 SCENE 1 Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir: Agape (2021) In the video work Agape, four performers are asked to pre-determine a separate interpretation of a text or graphic score. Each musician must navigate a series of harmonic changes, occurring in circular movements. They may agree on certain aspects of the performance, such as intensity or tonality, but this is neither required nor desired; the goal is to reveal the individuality of each performer, bringing out personal and unique sonic realisations of the score. The performances are then merged, allowing the listener to experience the contrast in the different interpretations of the "same" moment, realised within the same space. This merging of time highlights how the activation of the vertical dimension accentuates the diversity of the horizontal. Each performer's choices uncover and clarify new elements within the work. Agape is presented in an open and immersive audio-visual format at Scene 1. The work was nominated for "Composition of the Year" in the classical/contemporary category at the Icelandic Music Awards in 2022. From the outskirts of Iceland, Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir follows what Steve Smith (The New Yorker) describes as an "elemental style," guided by an inner logic in her compositional approach. She often integrates sound and other phenomena into an inseparable whole, creating dynamic, breathing, living structures through experimental performance practices and notation. Bergrún holds a master's degree in composition from Mills College, California, and currently resides in Reykjavík. Since 2022, she has been a lecturer in composition, specialising in artistic development, at the Iceland University of the Arts. 22:00 MASKINHALLEN Mark Knoop & Sam Salem: Waves of Crashing Blackness (2024) Waves of Crashing Blackness is a work for piano, electronics, and static audiovisual media, developed in collaboration between pianist Mark Knoop and composer Sam Salem أسامة سالم. The piece premiered at the opening concert of the Another Sky festival in London in 2024. Mark Knoop is a fearless explorer of music across all eras, both as a pianist and conductor, known for his versatile technique and virtuosity. He has focused on works by contemporary composers, and his personal interpretations of standard repertoire and 20th-century music have received high critical acclaim. In addition to solo performances, he regularly appears with ensembles such as Plus-Minus and Apartment House, as well as in a duo with soprano Juliet Fraser. Sam Salem أسامة سالم creates audiovisual works for performers, electronics, and video, challenging traditional perceptions of concert presentation and instrumental virtuosity. He completed a PhD in electroacoustic composition in 2011 at the University of Manchester and has since shifted his practice towards incorporating live performance. His works have been performed at festivals and concert series worldwide, earning numerous awards. He is also the co-director of the contemporary music festival Another Sky. Your ticket grants access to both concerts.
