Book Outdoorlife Norway’s privately - guided hike to Kjerag and enjoy an intimate, hassle-free visit to one of Norway’s most visited natural icons. Get an introduction to the region’s barren, glacier-scoured landscapes while travelling by car to the trailhead. Hike on trails that have been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas, and enjoy the exhilaration of standing on the mountain’s cliffside, nearly a kilometer above the Lysefjord. Round out your adventure with visits to some of the region’s unique cultural landmarks.

About 10,000 years ago, massive glaciers formed Norway’s rugged landscapes and fjords. At some point, the famous Kjerag boulder was wedged into a mountain crevasse. Ever since, the ‘Majesty of the Lysefjord’ has been suspended 984 meters (3,230 feet) over the Lysefjord.

After being picked up at the time and location of your choosing (see ‘Duration and Pick-up Details’ tab, above), your adventure will begin with a 2.5-hour drive to the trailhead. Along the way, your nature guide, who has first-hand knowledge about the Ryfylke region, will share stories about its natural and cultural history. During the ride, you’ll also get in introduction to Fjord-Norway’s many landscapes, including mountains and valleys, lakes, and waterfalls.

Upon arrival at the trailhead, known as The Eagle’s Nest, your guide will give a safety briefing before leading you up the trail. During the 2.5-hour hike to the boulder, you’ll encounter 3 periods of steep climbing interspersed with 2 shallow valleys. Along the way, you’ll ascend 800 meters while enjoying views of Fjord Norway’s vast mountain wilderness as well as the village of Lysebotn, which is situated at the head of the Lysefjord. You’ll be given ample opportunities to catch your breath and snap photos of the beautiful nature. The final 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) leading up to the Kjerag boulder are relatively flat, which will allow you to focus more on the environment around you.

Once you reach the edge of the mountain’s plateau, while standing on a 1000-meter-high cliff, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the 42-kilometer-long Lysefjord. Cliff-side, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and enjoy your packed lunch. If you’re among the brave, and conditions permit, you’ll have the opportunity to stand atop the Kjerag boulder, which hangs a heart-stopping 984 meters above the fjord. Base-jumping is legal in Norway, so if you’re lucky, you’ll also get to watch as daredevils hurdle themselves off the mountainside.

After the lunch break, your guide will lead you back down to the Eagle’s Nest, which takes approximately 2 hours. You’ll then begin your 3-hour journey back to Stavanger. The guide will navigate over a mountain pass through the municipality of Sirdal and onward to Byrkjedalstunet*, which has been described as a miniature version of Norway. The site includes a charming country hotel, a restaurant that serves traditional Norwegian cuisine, and a small-scale candle factory that also serves as an outlet for local artisans. You’ll have an opportunity to purchase traditional, hand-made arts & crafts, artisanal foods, wool designer wear, and carved wood souvenirs, amongst other treasures. This portion of the tour lasts about 30 minutes.

Upon your return to Stavanger, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Viking monument ‘Swords in Rock’*, where king Harald Fairhair’s triumph in battle (between the years of 872 and 900) resulted in Norway finally becoming one kingdom.

The hike to Kjerag and back is quite demanding: you’ll trek 11 kilometers (6.85 miles) with an ascent of 800 meters (2,625 feet) in approximately 5.5 hours.  During the autumn, weather conditions can be unstable. As needed, the guide will adjust the equipment (ice spikes, etc.) you use to match the weather and trail conditions.

*This is the standard tour itinerary. It may be altered/tailored, depending on guests’ time allowance, schedule, hiking abilities, as well as other factors including ferry schedules and weather.
