The Big Blue is a deeply personal film that springs from director Luc Besson's passion for deep-sea diving and for the ‘people’ of the sea: the dolphins. The script was developed in collaboration with Jacques Mayol, among others, whose life the film is partly based on. Mayol's diving achievements made him one of the most amazing freedivers of all time. The film was a huge success in France, with as many as nine million French people flocking to the cinemas, so much so that the term ‘the big blue generation’ was even launched.
As children, Enzo and Jacques were friends, bonded by their love of the sea. They lose touch when Jaqcue's father dies in a diving-related accident. Years later they meet again, but everything has changed. Jacques is drawn to the great depths where his ‘family’, the dolphins, live. He dives deeper than humans are physically capable of.
