"This is undoubtedly the best thing I've written so far," Britten told his publisher about his Violin Concerto and the evocative pre-war work (1938–39). Shostakovich referred to Symphonies 7-9 as his "war symphonies." This concert features Symphony No. 8, one of his darkest and most tragic works, composed during World War II and premiered in 1943, shortly after Stalin defeated Hitler at the Battle of Stalingrad.
