Klostergarden has its origins in Utstein Gard. Utstein Kloster, Norway's only preserved medieval monastery, is located right in the heart of the farm. Over the years, the buildings and grounds have had many functions and have been a chieftain's seat, royal estate, monastery, manor house and family farm.
Today, Utstein Gard is run by Inger Lise and Anders Schanche Rettedal, who represent the 11th generation on the farm. The monastery farm has around 450 winter-fed sheep, 30 suckler cows, 15-30 outdoor pigs and pig production adapted to sustainable principles. In addition, a large protected cultural landscape is managed. The farm has also established a farm shop, just below Utstein Kloster.
