To the Norwegian public, Steinfeld is known as a tough and persistent foreign reporter, famous for his distinct Bergen dialect. He has had an extraordinary career as one of NRK’s most prominent correspondents, reporting major historical events in the East for decades.
Steinfeld worked for NRK from 1976 to 2014 and served as a foreign correspondent in Russia for 18 years. He was also stationed in Budapest and Belgrade as NRK’s correspondent for the Balkans.
Through his radio and TV reporting, the Norwegian people gained unprecedented insight into the Soviet Union. He reported from the glasnost era in 1989 through to the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and German reunification.
Steinfeld is widely recognised for securing interviews with key political figures such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, and Prime Minister Nikolai Ryzhkov (1991–1994), establishing him as a journalist of international calibre.
