Despite being demanding, the hike to Frafjordhatten is a very nice experience.

The walk up to the top of Frafjordhatten (815 m) is demanding – but the reward is a magnificent panoramic view! The well-marked trail starts at Frafjord cabin rentals, and follows an old road, up through Ørestø nature reserve to Frafjørdstølen mountain farm.

You will pass through a rather dense deciduous forest where there are many magnificent old oaks and linden trees, before the landscape opens up, revealing traces of the abandoned mountain farms.

The trail continues to the right of Dypingen (556 m), ascends toward Flæetjørn (625 m) and follows the shore of this lake toward the valley of Murtedalen.

However, the quickest way to Frafjordhatten is to choose the pass to the left of the peak; you cross a small traverse valley before the final ascent. Here the trail itself is not distinct, but there is a series of small cairns to guide you.

Return by the same route to the traverse valley, and then turn left down the pass to Murtedalen where your route joins the trail again. Follow the trail to the bridge at Kommedalsstølen,
Stølsvatnet lake, and the steep but scenic "lover's path" down the valley of Norddalen to Molaug. Then simply follow the road back to the Frafjord rental cabins. Allow eight hours for the round-trip walk.
