Guided hike to Preikestolen

Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), formed over 10,000 years ago, is Norway's most popular natural attraction, and over 350,000 people visit the dizzying mountain plateau every year. The hike's destination is the scenic viewpoint with stunning views of the fjord below. As a bonus, the hike takes you through the lush natural landscape of Western Norway, with picturesque woodlands and several scenic viewpoints along the way. The hike covers varied terrain, including swamps, forests and stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas.

Approximately 40 minutes drive from the pick-up point, you will reach the car park after driving 292 metres under the fjord from Stavanger. Once at the starting point, your guide will check your equipment and make any necessary adjustments. You will receive a short safety briefing with information about the trail, expected conditions and useful hiking tips before starting on the day's exciting adventure!

The trail offers a mixed terrain with steep gravel slopes, climbing over boulders, stone steps, wooden paths over bogs and forest paths. After around 2.5 hours of hiking, you'll reach Preikestolen, a flat plateau measuring 25 x 25 metres, 604 metres above the legendary Lysefjord. Here, panoramic views of the fjord await.

Food will be prepared and you'll have something hot to drink while you enjoy the view. After the break, you either walk back the same way or choose the "off the beaten track" path on the way back, depending on time and conditions.

If you choose the lesser-known path, you follow a trail to the top of the mountain with views down to Preikestolen. If you decide to go all the way to the top, you'll get a 360-degree view of the entire area, including beyond Stavanger. A bonus of choosing this route is the opportunity to descend from the mountain on a less-trodden path most of the way. There are usually very few people on this trail, as it is not marked or signposted. You will eventually meet the regular trail and ultimately return the same way on the last part of the return journey.
