Ruten: Award-winning city park in Sandnes! The city's gathering site, fountains, play areas, skate park, roller skating track and green areas.

The city park Ruten is located just by the central bus and train station and is merely a stone's throw from Langgata, the main pedestrian street of Sandnes. The park has something on offer for both kids and adults. The combination of grass, trees, fountains, skatepark and open areas creates a green lung of versatile use. An enormous, iconic circle is the icing on the cake.

The architecture

The entire city space of Sandnes has been transformed with the project "Lysning" (translates to a clearing) won by architects Space Group/Superunion. A large illuminated circle constitute the frame of the town's park and area for festivities and is now a landmark that can be seen clearly from the air. Within the circle, you'll have room for organising a circus, the national day (17 May), and large outdoor concerts. The architects have emphasised that the space should be functional for everyday and larger event usages.

Innovation award for inclusive design in the architecture category

DOGA has awarded Ruten City Park a prize for its inclusive design (2024). Ruten receives the Innovation Award for Inclusive Design in the architecture category, as a multifunctional and diverse city square for good experiences. The jury's statement:

"Ruten City Park is an innovative and thoughtful gathering place for the full range of Sandnes residents. This is an organised and varied square that weaves together the city's most important functions. It's easy for everyone to get around, and you'll quickly find a cosy, flower-rich place to spend the afternoon. The city park gives us the opportunities, we get to choose how we use them."
