Utstein Monastery

Utstein Monastery is Norway’s best-preserved medieval monastery, beautifully situated in a protected cultural landscape on the island of Mosterøy, about a 30-minute drive from Stavanger.
Utstein Monastery is the best-preserved medieval monastery in Norway, located amidst stunning natural surroundings on Mosterøy. In the Middle Ages, it served as a monastery for Augustinian monks, and in the 18th century, it became a bailiff’s residence. The monastery remained the main building of the Klostergarden farm until it was turned into a museum in the 1930s. Utstein is mentioned in historical sources as early as the 11th century, originally as a royal estate for Viking King Harald Fairhair after the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872. The monastery was constructed beginning in the 1260s, though parts of the building may be older, possibly remnants of an earlier royal estate.
The church is unique in Norway, with its tower placed directly between the chancel and the nave. At Utstein Monastery, you’ll be welcomed by friendly guides in medieval costume who proudly show off the monastic garden filled with roses, ornamental shrubs, and herbs. Come and experience the peace and magic of this truly special place!
Magnus Lagabøte’s National Law of 1274: An exhibition for children and adultsIn the Abbot’s House at Utstein Monastery, you can visit the engaging and interactive exhibition “Miserabiles Personae – Magnus Lagabøte’s National Law of 1274.” This is the story of Norway’s very first nationwide law – a law that for the first time offered protection to the most vulnerable members of society. You’ll also learn about King Magnus Lagabøte’s connection to Utstein Monastery, which was likely his royal estate during travels in the Ryfylke region.
The exhibition, created by the Norwegian Children’s Museum, is designed for families with children. It follows 10-year-olds Kristin and Magnus, who lived in Stavanger during the Middle Ages. Kristin is a poor servant girl, while Magnus is the wealthy son of a priest. Through film, comics, and hands-on activities, visitors gain insight into what life was like for children in the 13th century.
