The Valberg tower (Valbergtårnet) was constructed from 1850 to 1853 and was the former observation tower (watchmen's tower) of Stavanger. The architect was Chr. Grosch. The tower was the permanent lodging of the watchmen in Stavanger. One of their duties was to alert the people in town when there was a fire.
The last guard was Tobias Sandstøl. He was a watchman for 18 years until the year 1922. The famous children's book author Torbjørn Egner knew about this Tobias when he was writing his story about Kardemommeby (the town of cardamom). We are therefore quite sure that the "Tobias in the tower" is the real "Tobias in the Valberg tower" in the book.
Valbergtårnet has a watchmen's museum on the first floor which is interesting for school classes and history enthusiasts. The tower is also possible to rent for events.
