Hammerfest: The northernmost town in the world

Experience the arctic winter in the micro metropolis at 70 degrees north. At the gateway to the Barents Sea, tradition meets modern spirit as Hammerfest has an active urban community, lots of culture and scenic nature.

Hammerfest is a lively and dynamic city, where post World War II reconstructed buildings are complemented by contemporary architecture. The pomor trade with Russia and the rich traditions of hunting and fishing have left their mark – as has the burning of the city during the Second World War. Recently, the industrial development in energy and gas has transported the city into the modern age.

Visitors can experience this Arctic city by strolling through the town centre, visit the Museum of Reconstruction and Syvstjerna gallery, become a member of the Polar Bear Society or take part in one of the offered guided tours.

Into the ice

Hammerfest is a town by the Arctic Sea and has therefore always been a base for tough seafarers, fishermen, hunters and polar explorers. On this trip, you will learn about the great age of exploration, especially Roald Amundsen’s South Pole expedition.

Accompanied by Hammerfest’s local hero Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm, Amundsen was the first man to set foot on the geographic South Pole. Lindstrøm, born in Hammerfest in 1866, was a polar chef and famous for his various talents, his positive attitude and his signature dish – Biff á la Lindstrøm.

You will be provided with Arctic Expedition outfits and transportation to the mountain Salen. From there, the group will hike towards the summit, where you can plant the Norwegian flag and take photos. Next stop is Camp Framheim, a cozy tent with a fire place, where you will be served the Biff á la Lindstrøm, warm cakes and more expedition stories.

Price: from NOK 690 per person
