Vesterålen – kingdom of the whales

Visit the archipelago of Vesterålen, inhabited by whales, seals and seabirds. Situated just north of the Lofoten Islands, this peaceful region has a strong fishing culture, lots of interesting art to explore, as well as a front row seat for viewing the northern lights.

Dynamic Variation:

In Vesterålen, you can see the ocean meet the mountains and the sky meet the horizon. It is a tale of winter light and wilderness – imagine seeing the northern lights on a beach under the endless sky.

Skiing and snowshoe activities

The striking snow-covered mountains in Vesterålen are inviting to off-piste and telemark skiers. Popular destinations for those wanting to ski in untouched nature, the white peaks of Vesterålen are made for venturing off the beaten path and creating your own.

In addition, there are several well prepared tracks if you prefer cross-country skiing or exploring the landscape on snowshoes.

Northern lights and Sami Culture

The northern lights shine bright above Vesterålen, illuminating the polar nights. This natural phenomenon is difficult to catch on camera, but on a Northern Light Safari, local guides will teach you how to freeze the moment.

A visit to a native Sami family to hear their interpretation of their culture, the polar night and the starry sky is also a must when you are in the region.
