Bike trip Nelaug in Åmli - Arendal

Nelaug - Arendal
Ta sykkelen med ut i naturen
Nydelig natur

A classic for train lovers and cycling enthusiasts alike!

This scenic route follows the river Nidelva southward from the forests and lakes of Åmli to the coastal town of Arendal – a beautiful day trip with varied terrain, quiet roads, and plenty of charming stops along the way.

The tour starts at Nelaug Station in Åmli, easily reached by train from Arendal. From there, the route heads south through gently rolling countryside with rivers, lakes, and forest. The first few kilometres follow county road 412 before turning onto gravel roads toward Vimme, crossing railway tunnels and small bridges with stunning views of the river.

Along the way, you’ll pass idyllic places like Flatenfoss, Kiland, Haugsjå, and Bøylefoss, where historic power stations and small farms tell the story of waterpower and railway heritage. There are several picnic and swimming spots along the river – perfect for a break and a packed lunch.

After Bøylefoss, the route continues towards Bøylestad, Lyngroth, and Bjørnes, before reaching Granestua – a popular hiking destination with a cosy café open on Sundays. From here, it’s a gentle downhill ride back to Arendal, following the path along Longumvannet lake and onwards to the city centre on dedicated cycle paths.

The full trip is about 40 kilometres, ideal for those who enjoy a full-day ride with time to stop and explore. The route combines asphalt and gravel, with no steep climbs. Many choose to take the train up to Nelaug and cycle back down to Arendal – a perfect mix of train, nature, and adventure.

Train and bicycle tickets can be purchased via the Go-Ahead app, on go-aheadnordic.no, or from the ticket machine at Arendal Station.
