Merdø – a small island full of Southern Norwegian charm.

Just a short boat trip from Arendal lies Merdø – a car-free island filled with white wooden houses, narrow paths, lush gardens, and some of the region’s most beautiful beaches.

On the inner side of the island, you’ll find shallow, family-friendly sandy beaches perfect for swimming and play. On the outer side, the scenery opens toward the Skagerrak, with smooth coastal rocks, pebble beaches, and waves rolling in from the open sea – pure southern Norway in miniature.

Climb up to the old pilot’s cabin to see the compass rose carved into the rock in 1654, or visit the museum, which tells the story of the island’s rich maritime past.

When hunger strikes, enjoy a meal at the summer open café Merdø Kro, or bring your own picnic and find a peaceful spot in the grass. Life moves slower here – it’s all about relaxing, breathing in the sea air, and enjoying the moment.

You can also stay overnight on Merdø – either in a tent or hammock at the designated camping areas at Gravene, or aboard your own boat at the guest pier on the west side of the island.

Getting there
Merdø is easily reached by ferry from Arendal in the summer months. The boats MF Merdø and MF Trau run several times a day. You can also arrive by private boat and dock at the guest pier.

Merdø is the perfect destination for anyone seeking sun, sea, and the easy charm of the southern coast.
