The National Touring Theatre: The Teacher // Lyngdal Cultural Centre
A powerful, intimate and humorous theatre production about the role of the teacher, inner turmoil, responsibility, and the fragile meeting between adults and children — performed by writer, actor, and slam-poet Fredrik Høyer.
“I wait until it becomes quiet…”
Being a teacher is like being a stand-up comedian, psychologist, child-raiser, and lecturer all at once. Everything must be taught — especially the love one develops for the students. If learning means meeting oneself, and understanding means facing another person, then what does responsibility for one’s own learning actually mean?
The Teacher follows Kristian, a newly hired substitute teacher placed in front of a fifth-grade class — a microcosm of society filled with expectations, needs, and dreams. Underneath, he struggles to hold together his own inner chaos. Confronted by the honesty and unpredictability of ten-year-olds, he is forced to examine his inner child, the teacher role, and the system around him.
Fredrik Høyer, one of Norway’s most distinctive theatrical voices, performs the role with humour, musicality, vulnerability, and depth. The text transforms the everyday into something mythic and universal — a story about how we see ourselves through the eyes of others, and the roles we play in each other’s lives.
