Climb the five hills surrounding the town, and see Grimstad from different angles.
By the tourist information, cross the road at the traffic lights. Turn left, and continue along Pharos vei. You pass the car park "Arresten" and turn right into Jørgen Bangs gate. Take the first road to the right (Vardegaten) and then again to the right into Høyvardeveien. You will reach Vardeheia (41 m a.s.l.) with its magnificent view.
Continue your walk on Høyvardeveien down to Lillesandsveien, where you turn right. After that you turn left into Vestregate, follow Storgaten and finally turn right into Frivoldveien. After 200 m you will see a narrow path on the right, which takes you up to Fløyheia (63.5 m a.s.l.) with beautiful views to the sea, town and countryside.
This trail has been created based on Knut Hamsun’s work, “On Overgrown Paths”, and you’ll find quotes from the book along the way. There are some steep sections. You’ll reach Møllerheia (41.9 m a.s.l.) and follow the path down to a staircase, which takes you to Kirkegaten. Go to the left and then to the right in order to reach Kirkeheia (27 m a.s.l.) with its beautiful park and the wooden Grimstad Church - one of Norway’s largest of its kind.
You can climb to the top of Binabben (58.5 m a.s.l.) via Arendals-veien. Follow the path which starts 130 m after the petrol station to the right. At the top you will get a fantastic 360° view towards countryside, town, harbour and skerries. On the way down, turn right at the first fork. You walk around
Binabben. Follow the signs for "Biodden". You get into a housing estate. Keep walking down on Batteriveien and Bioddgaten. Turn left and follow the quays back to the tourist information.
Duration: approx. 1 ½ hours.
Terrain: Varied, some hilly areas, exciting countryside. Sturdy shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are required.
Level of difficulty: Medium
