The family-friendly museum in beautiful surroundings.

The Maritime Museum in Grimstad is a museum for children. Here, kids can unleash their creativity in the "Children’s Maritime Workshop", where they can make their own macramé keychains, explore the cargo capacity of a modeling clay ship, and help decorate a large fishing net.

For adventurous codebreakers, the museum offers an exciting escape game set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Inside the exhibitions, children can try on sailor tattoos, navigate as a captain in the "Sail & Trade" merchant game, and learn sailor’s knots and signal flags.

The Maritime Museum offers free admission for children and youth up to 15 years old, including an activity booklet to help them discover the museum’s treasures, as well as free participation in the children’s workshop. All activities for children and young visitors are available daily during the museum’s opening hours.

Outside the museum, on the pier, there is a swimming ladder for those who want to take a dip. In July, the Bathing Boat stops here several times a week. Don't forget to visit our café for ice cream, soft drinks, and cakes.

For adult visitors, we offer several exciting exhibitions. The main exhibition focuses on the Age of Sail, exploring why Agder was Norway’s most important maritime region in the 19th century. It tells the story of the ups and downs of the shipping industry, how sailing ships were built, what the crew did on board, how sailors mastered the sea, and the role of maritime trade during wartime and conflicts.

The museum also has a special exhibition on war sailors during World War II, as well as an exhibition on the transition to modern shipping, the power shift from captains to shipowners, and the move from sail to steam.
