In the old days, before roads were cut through the terrain, the people took their way on foot or on horseback.

Heavy burdens were placed on both horses and people and transported from the interior villages to the coast. Buying goods were brought back.

From Setesdalen to Kristiansand was the so-called mountaineer road. Today is the southernmost 53 kilometers marked. Middle College Outdoor Recreation has released the brochure of the mountaineer road.

Part of this walking and riding trail runs from Ærekilen the Hornes, over Lauvås Moor and down to Homme at the Hægeland church. The route was also the church for the people of Lauvås heath. When the steamer was put into operation on Kilefjorden in the 1800s, slowed traffic over the hill. But traces of riding the road is still visible. Now it is also marked out for the modern hostel should be able to find your way along the 10 km long passage way.

Mountaineer road continues from Eikeland over the hills beyond to Bring Huge Tjomsås. It is recommended to take the exciting tour of the nearly 500 meters high Ropstadknuten. From here there are magnificent views of the ocean.

For more details, see Middle College Recreational Council brochure "mountaineer Road", which can be purchased at our office or at DNT Sør.
