Flakkefossen

-Flakkefossen is one of Birkeland most spectacular attractions. The view from the top is also worth seeing.

There are several ways to reach Flakkefossen waterfall. You can drive there by car or walk along the road.

For a scenic walk with as much forest terrain as possible, the following route is recommended: Start in Birkenesparken and follow the lit trail down towards the river and Flakkebrua bridge. Cross the bridge and follow the signs along the road towards Flakk. It is recommended to walk down to the base of the waterfall and follow the marked path along the falls up to the top. On the return, you can either follow the same route back or walk the gravel road back to Birkeland.

Local history
In earlier times, timber was floated down the waterfall using a large wooden log chute. Unfortunately, the chute is no longer intact, and only a few remains can be seen today. During the log driving period, a dam was built at the top of the waterfall, which still stands today. Along the path at the base of the falls, there are remains of an old crofter’s holding. In 1572, a sawmill was built at the bottom of the waterfall, one of the first sawmills in Aust-Agder. Several sawmills were later built in the area. Below the road, near the base of the waterfall, clear remains of a former sawmill can still be seen. There are good fishing spots at the base of the waterfall.

How to get there
Drive north through Birkeland town centre, turn left towards Mosfjell, cross Teinefossbrua bridge and then turn left towards Flakk. The waterfall is located along the road, with several parking areas nearby.
