Vondestien is the old walkway between Snekkestø and Udal in western Lista. The path was completed in 1805, according to the story from here, and it was made by a farmer who needed it to get to and from his farm. It is in the name that this is a demanding cultural-historical path across the weather-hardened stretch of coast. When you give information about the path, you must state that people must be careful when walking here, and that they should avoid the trip in stormy weather and when it is frosty and slippery. The path has recently been upgraded as part of the Coast Path, it is well marked and secured with wrought iron railings in the most rugged and steep places.
At the same time, the Vondestien, with its 1.2 kilometres, provides those who travel here with unique nature experiences! The sun sets in the sea out in the west, the bird life on Lista is unique, and the barren and windswept landscape presents today's people with unfamiliar challenges. At the same time, it gives an understanding of how skilled the people were who lived out here between the sea and steep mountains.
From Udal, a path of around 4.5 kilometers leads to a further path to Varnes lighthouse. Here, many a drama has unfolded along the sea, ships in distress on the weather-resistant Listafjord, people on land who often risked their lives to come to the rescue. And on 28 October 1852, in terrible weather, the steamship "Neptune" arrives in distress at sea out there, fires the emergency cannon and raises the pilot's flag. But the lighthouse keeper, who is also a pilot, refuses to go out, it's too dangerous! - Ingeborg from Sirdal is employed as a maid by the lighthouse keeper and demands to be rowed out to "Neptune" by the lighthouse keeper's son and son-in-law. She is hoisted on board via a line and manages to save the ship and the crew! Ingeborg is set ashore again when "Neptune" travels on, but she is not welcome there! She had left her service, it said. She lives the rest of her life in disgrace for having challenged the conventions, for having done a man's job. Today there is an installation by the lighthouse by the artist Borghild Rudjord Unneland, two large empty shoes that remind of Ingeborg's resolute behavior and unfortunately bad fate.
