Harkmark church

Harkmark kirke

Harkmark Church is a long church from 1613 located in Harkmark in Mandal.

Harkmark Church, built in 1613, is a long church constructed from rough pine timber and stands as one of Mandal municipality’s most valuable cultural heritage sites. The church is a gem of wooden architecture, with approximately 135 seats and an interior that reflects a strong historical and religious tradition. The altarpiece and pulpit date from the 17th century, and the altarpiece from 1651 depicts Jesus on the cross, surrounded by Mary and John. The pulpit is placed high along the right wall and, together with other elements such as the baptismal font, altar rail, gallery, and pews, is decorated in harmonious colors and adorned with biblical motifs. The ceiling is painted light blue and adorned with stars, giving the church interior a heavenly atmosphere.

The church is protected under the Cultural Heritage Act and was restored between 1972 and 1975. It was repainted externally in 1999 and today appears as a well-preserved and vibrant cultural monument. In 2005–2006, the church received new restroom facilities and a new parking area, and there are plans to establish a green space near the nearby ancient monument located by the county road.

Just outside the churchyard wall is a local variant of “Stonehenge,” which, together with the churchyard wall and the church itself, is also protected. Harkmark Church thus represents not only an architectural and religious heritage but also a historical landscape with roots extending far back in time.
