Spangereid Canal

A canal from the Viking Age
Spangereid in Lindesnes was a chieftain’s seat during the Viking Age. Archaeological finds and excavations show that during the Viking Age, there was a canal between Lehnefjorden and Njervefjorden, right through what is today the center of Spangereid. Most likely, the Vikings had the canal built to avoid having to round the stormy Lindesnes, while the canal also likely provided both income and control over sea traffic between east and west.
In 2007, a replica of the Viking canal was “reopened,” making it possible again to travel by boat between east and west without having to go around Lindesnes.
