Enjoy a walk on an unused road passing by fjords, protected forests and old bridges in Farsund Southern Norway.
In 1904 a driving route between Farsund and Heard was opened and was called Bøensbakken (Boens hilly road). It was originally an old railway line but was later converted to a drivable road. In 1965 Bøensbakken was closed to motor traffic and is now a fantastic place to walk and visit.
This road is in Vest-Agder longest and best preserved with stunning views along the bay (fjord) with a depth of around 180 meters. The road follows the steep mountain side on a ledge and some places blasted into the rock. A beautiful stone set prickly straps and multiple drainage stone ensures that rainwater is directed away from the road. You will even pass by a 100 year old swing bridge that is still in operation, a nature reserve with protected oak forest and some benches where you can sit and enjoy the views.
When you arrive there by car, the best place to park is at Kjerringdalen which is not far from the Bøen farm. There is a car parking sign posted at the entrance of Ravnehei tunnel.
Please note that there is a risk of ice and rocks falling, so proceed with caution.
