About Niels Henrik Abel
Niels Henrik Abel (born 5 August 1802) was a Norwegian mathematician. He examined and solved problems that other mathematics scientists had struggled with for hundreds of years. He made new discoveries and formulated questions that remain central elements in modern mathematics.
In 2002, in connection with the 200-year anniversary of Abel’s birth, parliament established the Abel Prize. As there is no Nobel Prize in mathematics, such a prize was proposed in 1899 by Sophius Lie. The significance of Abel’s mathematical breakthrough was at that time indisputable. However, it took a hundred years before the prize became a reality. (Source: Wikipedia)
