Now you have the opportunity not only to see, but also to meet the king of the forest. Visit the elk park Elgtun at the Landeskogen Peace Center in Bygland.
Here you will meet four elks; Olga and Orvar who were born in Sweden in May 2014 and have been raised as tame animals at Elgtun. Elvira and Frøya joined Olga and Orvar in in the autumn of 2015 and will form the basis of a small herd of 5–10 elks. The animals have gradually been introduced to human contact and appreciate visits.
Providing suitable premises for the elks has been of utmost importance. This area contains several sources of water, it is rugged and hilly, and the animals have the chance to find a peaceful spot for themselves.
Three times a day – at 10.00, 14.00 and 17.00 – the animals are fed, and you may enter the enclosure to watch this, if you like to. We also offer guided tours in the forest every day at 12.00. Hopefully you will get a close encounter with Olga and Orvar.
If you arrive at other times, you may spend the waiting period enjoying some of the other activities at Elgtun, such as elk exhibition, nature trail and jewellery workshop. We also have a basic cafeteria service.
The Landeskogen Peace Center in Bygland is run by the organization Travel for Peace. The imposing building complex is today home to numerous activities related to the purpose of the organization. It is beautifully situated a few hundred metres from the main road Rv. 9 which runs through the Setesdal valley. Travel for Peace has allocated vast areas to the elk park Elgtun, and is one of its co-owners, together with the company Naturexpo.
Elgtun is open from 1 June to 20 September; daily from 09.00 to 17.00.
