Rauøra – a hidden sandy gem in Trollheimen with white sand, crystal-clear mountain water, and nature experiences for the whole family.

Deep within the mountain massif of Trollheimen lies a hidden gem: Rauøra. When locals from Oppdal say they're going to "the beach," this is the beach they're talking about.

You wouldn’t expect to find such a large sandy beach with chalk-white sand and rust-red rocks this far into the mountains, but here you get a southern beach vibe in the highlands. Under swaying mountain birches, you hear the sounds of summer fun—parasols and camping chairs, the smell of sausages on disposable grills, and not least, the icy mountain water meeting the warm sand. Few things can compare to those rare summer days when Rauøra is enjoyed to the fullest. These are also the days that make the best holiday memories.

To get to Rauøra, drive west from Oppdal town center. You can either go via Skardalen and Grøtsetra, over Remma and into the Gjevilvass valley, or take the turn toward Festa, continue toward Osen, and follow the road along Lake Gjevilvatnet to Rauøra. On the way, you’ll pass mountain pastures with cows and calves—maybe even spot some grazing pigs. During the summer, the valley is bustling with tourists, locals, and cabin dwellers, whether on bikes or on foot. Most are heading to the same destination: Gjevilvasshytta and Rauøra.

From summer 2023, mats were installed at Rauøra to make it easier for wheelchair users and others with disabilities to access the beach. These mats are bolted down and wide enough for two wheelchairs side by side. They also allow for easy stroller access. The area is equipped with toilets and waste containers, but it's important that all visitors help keep the area clean and take their trash with them. That way, it's more pleasant for the next guests.

Rauøra consists of two beaches, and it's not permitted to park caravans or camper vans in any of the parking areas. Tents and lavvus are allowed both on the beaches and in the surrounding outfields.
