Storlidalen and Lønset

About 40 km west of Oppdal town center, you enter one of Norway's most beautiful valleys: Storlidalen. This valley is particularly renowned for its abundant snowfall, excellent ski trails, and jagged mountain peaks. It’s no wonder Storlidalen is often referred to as the "Davos of the North," and if you look closely, you might spot the Innerdal Tower from the film "Christmas in Blue Mountain" in the distance.

Storlidalen is famous for its 60 km of superb ski trails, always freshly groomed and maintained to the highest standards. These trails are among the first in the country to be groomed each season, and in a good year, you might be able to ski here from late October, although the season typically starts at the end of November. Visitors flock here to ski from the first snowfall until the snow lingers well into April. Storlidalen offers reliable snow conditions throughout the winter, providing stunning mountain views and varied skiing terrain.

The valley's rich alpine environment is also a haven for backcountry and ski touring enthusiasts. There are routes for every taste, from gentle mountain ski tours with longer approaches to steeper ascents on sharp peaks. Mountains like Storbekkhøa, Nonshøa, and Storhaugen are great for beginners in ski touring. For those seeking more challenging terrain and distances, Kråkvasstind is a good next step.

To reach Storlidalen, drive west along the national road from Oppdal town center. Turn right at Lønset, then continue past Lønset Church and drive another 20 km into the valley. If you’re up for a longer trek, you can leave your car at Lønset and ski this stretch along groomed ski trails. However, these trails may not be as snow-sure as those from Storlidalen to Tovatna, so it’s best to check Skiappen.no to see if the trails are open.
