A few kilometers west of Oppdal, you will find the Vang Burial Mound Field. This is one of Norway's and Northern Europe's largest burial sites from the Iron Age, with around 900 burial mounds set in a beautiful cultural landscape.

Magical and Unique

The Vang Burial Mound Field is exceptionally well-preserved and consists of nearly 900 burial mounds from the late Iron Age and especially the Viking Age (approximately 800-1000 AD). The burial site covers a 700-meter-long area spanning over 100 acres, with small mounds and cairns concentrated in an easily accessible and remarkable cultural landscape. This is one of the very few heritage areas in Trøndelag considered to have national value.

Excavations in 1999 revealed that the site was used as far back as the Roman and Migration periods. Numerous discoveries have provided insight into how the mountain Vikings' lives might have unfolded in this mountain village. Many of the finds are displayed at the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology in Trondheim.

The burial site is open to everyone as an attraction and outdoor area. In the summer of 2020, the path around the field was improved, and you can now take a walk on a gravel path around the entire site and read exciting facts and stories from the Viking Age on information boards and stone cubes. The Vang Burial Mound Field is fascinating for both adults and children, and an afternoon spent here will give you a profound historical insight into what life was like in Oppdal a thousand years ago. Take your time, soak in the atmosphere, imagine yourself in the Viking Age, and let your imagination run wild.

Oppdal Municipality encourages using Vang as an easily accessible and low-threshold hiking area. You will also find a service building with toilets, benches, and shelter.

Please note: Watch out for grazing animals and keep dogs on a leash.
