Autumn is fresh crisp air, low skies and bright red, yellow and orange colours.

Shorter days brings brighter colours

Gradually the days grow shorter, darkness descends early in the afternoon, and temperatures drop as winter approaches.

And the day-light is just magic. Norwegian cities and landscape glows in golden colours one day followed by the crisp grey and foggy palette that accompanies the rainy days.

Norwegian delicacy

To prepare a sheep's head for making traditional "Smalahove", the wool must first be burnt off. The head is then washed, split in two and cleaned; placed in brine for three days; and then smoked for between eight and ten hours using alder wood shavings.

Fish pond

Valdres is home to "Rakfisk from Valdres". The salted and semi-fermented trout is comparable with the maturing of cheese. The longer it is matured, the more flavour it has. Some of the most important aspects for getting a good Rakfisk is vigorous fish and good water quality.

Valley sky

Valdres is located approximately midway between Oslo and Bergen. The valley is protected to the west and north by the Jotunheimen mountains and to the south by the Gol mountain ridge.

A night at higher elevation

The DNT cabin atop Gaustatoppen Mountain dates from 1883, and is open until and during the fall break. Since it only has sleeping for ten guests, it is wise to book your spot in advance. If there are no vacancies, or if you want to be a real adventurer, it is possible to sleep outdoors in a tent.

Fairytale scenery

"Taking the shot is just one aspect of hunting. It's all about understanding what we live off and for, and yourself being a part of the grand scheme", says Bjørn Godal.

Northern fire

An excellent view of large parts of Steigen as well as seeing the Lofotveggen cliffs to the north, which extend out into the sea from Svolvær to the island of Røst.
