Longyearbyen

Sarkofagen A photographic hiking trip in a glacier landscape to the top of Sarkofagen We will start our trip in Longyeardalen by hiking up the east side of Sarkofagen. The path brings us along the glacier Larsbreen and trough its moraine material. On top of Sarkofagen we will have a cup of coffee or tea and some cookies and enough time to enjoy and picture the view over Longyearbyen, the glaciers, and Isfjorden. Then our trip continues southwards down to the glacier Longyearbreen where we put on some mini spikes and introduce you to the safety basics on glaciers and meltwater channels. During our descend on Longyearbreen we have the eastern slope of Nordenskiöldfjellet on our left-hand site, a mountain that reaches 1050 m a.s.l. and bears some snow fields even throughout the summer. In addition to the landscape photography, the tour offers small waterfalls to picture and plenty of photographic opportunities for guests interested in geology. On the way back down the valley we might find some Paleogene fossils in the loose moraine sediments of the glacier which are nice close-up motives but can also be taken home. Practical information: This tour includes crossing a glacier with mini spikes and hiking. No previous glacier knowledge is required. You need to be in good physical condition.
