Norway has a relatively well-connected public transport system and an extensive plane network, so it is possible to enjoy some of the remotest ski locations in the country. The skiing destinations have accommodation options for every taste, from full-service, high quality resorts and ultra-modern landscape hotels to charming rustic cabins and no-thrills campsites.

Norway’s skiing lodges and hotels have, for the large part, all the amenities to meet their guests’ requirements, including areas to dry equipment and facilities for preparing and waxing skis.

Aiming to provide the best possible ski experience, many places have their own dedicated team of certified skiing guides who can help you to locate the best and safest ski touring options available.

Above all else, the lodges are a great place to meet fellow skiers, share experiences and catch up on local conditions. Expect a Scandinavian level of comfort as you feast on traditional Nordic cuisine next to a crackling fire, or take cover under a reindeer pelt while you admire the starry night sky. Social areas double as spaces to relax, and many place offer saunas, hot tubs and Jacuzzis to soothe aching muscles.

The DNT (the Norwegian Trekking Association) operate a network of mountain cabins all over the country, and this comes in particularly handy if you prefer to create your own itinerary. The cabins are conveniently spread out along around 7,000 kilometres of marked skiing routes – just be aware that they may not be prepared, so do find out in advance.

While DNT’s cabins are basic in terms of facilities, they provide a welcome respite from the cold and are equipped with many of the essentials you need after a day outdoors.

Safety in the mountains

Norway is an incredible place to explore, with untamed mythical landscapes, mountains, valleys, and fjords. Before you enter the outdoors, get familiar with the nine simple rules of the Norwegian mountain code to help you stay safe.

Plan your trip and inform others about the route you have selected.
Adapt the planned routes according to ability and conditions.
Pay attention to the weather and the avalanche warnings. This is especially the case for ski tourers - check the current situation in your area on varsom.no and make sure you follow the advise given.
Be prepared for bad weather and frost, even on short trips.
Bring the necessary equipment so you can help yourself and others.
Choose safe routes. Recognize avalanche terrain and unsafe ice.
Use a map and a compass. Always know where you are.
Don’t be ashamed to turn around.
Conserve your energy and seek shelter if necessary.
