Lecture in Norwegian: Er offentlig sektor bedre enn sitt rykte?

The public sector is often blamed for high costs, low productivity and ever-growing bureaucracy. But is the picture really that simple?

In the book For rikt for hvem? (ed. Ali Esbati), economist and Statistics Norway researcher Erling Holmøy challenges several of the assumptions behind Martin Bech Holte’s criticism of the Norwegian model. Holmøy argues, among other things, that the value created by the public sector is underestimated, while the extent of resource use that can actually be considered wasteful is overestimated.

But how convincing is the defence of the public sector? What does society actually get in return for the money spent? And where is the line between a large and costly public sector and one that provides services that people want?

Erling Holmøy meets, among others, Kristin Clemet, head of the Civita think tank, for a debate on what the public sector costs, what it creates, and whether it has been given an unfairly bad reputation.
