THE SEA and the wreck at Basthabn

At Rossøysundet on Fogn in Rogaland lies a well-preserved medieval trading vessel in Basthabn Bay, at the south-western tip of the island of Fogn in Ryfylke. The wreck is approximately 15 metres long and has remained hidden in dense mud in shallow water. In 2026, marine archaeological investigations were carried out by Stavanger Maritime Museum. These revealed a wealth of new information about the wreck and its historical context.

Archaeologist Massimilliano Ditta will present the preliminary results from this year’s excavation of part of the shipwreck, exploring the vessel’s construction and historical context in greater detail.

The lecture takes us on a journey through ships, shipbuilding and networks in early medieval Norway and Northern Europe.
