For many years, Nesbyen has been an almost sacred destination for mountain bike enthusiasts from all over Europe, and it still is. But Nesbyen also offers beginner-friendly and gentle trails that are perfect for active families! HallingSpranget, Norway's longest bike trail, offers a whopping 17 km of pure mountain bike joy!
Nesbyen is one of six destinations in Hallingdal, Norway's largest region for mountain biking. Together, these destinations make up "Hallingdal Rides," a mountain biking paradise with trails and experiences that few other destinations can match.
TRANSPORT AND SHUTTLING
You can cycle to the top of most trails on your own, but to get the most out of your day of mountain biking in Nesbyen, we recommend using the shuttle buses - the mountain biking equivalent of a ski lift! During the summer months, shuttle buses run for cyclists to Østsida/Trytetjern and HallingSpranget.
BIKE RENTAL AND EQUIPMENT
What equipment do you need? For green and blue graded trails, a regular mountain bike in good condition and of course a helmet will do. For red and black graded trails, we recommend a full-suspension bike. Do you need to rent a bike? Mountain bikes for both children and adults, with and without electric motors, can be rented in Nesbyen town center.

WHICH TRAILS SHOULD I CHOOSE?
You can find the trails in Nesbyen and Hallingdal on Trailguide.net, where they are color-coded by difficulty level. Take the time to build your technical skills and experience before moving up to the next level.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRAILS
For novice mountain bikers and families with children, it's the green and blue graded (easy to moderately difficult) trails that count. The highlight among the family-friendly trails in Nesbyen is HallingSpranget. The route takes you on a spectacular journey from Nesfjellet down to the valley floor, and is one of Northern Europe's longest mountain bike trails at 17 km.
Due to the length of HallingSpranget, we recommend spending a day or two on easier and shorter trails first, both to check your equipment and become comfortable with your own skills. Below are some examples of trails to start with.
The bike trails around lake Trytetjern are perfect for beginners, families with children, and groups with varying skill levels. Here you will find three circular routes that start and end in the same place. The perfect ending to the bike ride is, of course, a refreshing dip in the lake!
In Nesbyen town center, you'll find a fun pump track, and a short bike ride will take you to the top of the flow trail at Storetoppen, a perfect taste of HallingSpranget.
Do you want to explore the high mountains and enjoy the view of distant mountains? At Nesfjellet, you will find an extensive network of well-maintained bike trails that are around 1000 meters above sea level. You can tailor your own routes by combining several of the trails in the area. After a successful trip, you can take a well-deserved break at the cozy Nystølkroken Café.
ENTHUSIASTS NESBYEN
In the hillside east of Nesbyen town centre, called Østsida, you'll find steep, technically challenging, and fast trails. If you're comfortable on red-graded trails, then shuttling in the east side is something you should treat yourself to.
At Nesfjellet, you'll find a variety of natural trails above the tree line, of which Trommenattrunden is the most popular. Hilly terrain, as well as lots of rocks and roots, require good technique and endurance. Also HallingSpranget is a must try, even for experienced riders. It's a perfect end to the day after riding technical trails in the morning.
