Vestre Gumøyknute/Signalen has the archipelago's second highest viewing point and offers a great hiking trip. "Signalen" towers 113metres over the ocean and offers a spectacular panoramic view of the archipelago.
The beautiful island of Gumøy is Kragerø's third largest island, and on this island we also find the archipelago's second highest viewing point Vestre Gumøyknute, also called “Signalen”. “Signalen” towers 113metres over the ocean and offers a spectacular panoramic view of the archipelago. This is a great hike and the hiking trails are easy to find, so just remember to bring good footwear and preferably some binoculars and a camera to get the most out of the amazing view and capture it on camera.
The old coast guard station
On Vestre Gumøyknute/Signalen you will also find an old coast guard station that has been refurbished and made available for accommodation. The Coast Guard station was in operation until the 60's and after that the station has stood empty. Nowadays the station has gotten a fresh coat of paint, a new wood stove and windows and new mattresses in the beds. It is possible to stay in the cabin for NOK200/night, to book a room contact Eva Isnes at 0047 / 97 50 81 76.
Below the cabin there is a toilet and there is an old well 50 meters away where you can get water for washing and cooking. Firewood is found in the woodshed, but if you could bring some cubes with you along the way that’s great. There is a sack of wood in the bottom of the path.
Binocular viewer
On Signalen you´ll also will find a binocular viewer, which you can use for free!
Public transportation to Gumøy
From Kragerø there are ferries and taxi boats that travel back and forth to Gumøy. The trip out takes about 20 minutes by ferry and takes you to Tangane Ferry Terminal. Here you will find a large map showing the various hiking trails in Gumøy, and from here on it is easy to find the right trail thanks to the many signs that are located around the island. More information about public transport to water can be found here!
Private/Taxi boat to Gumøy
If you come by private boat to Gumøy there is a nice harbor in Skutevika, east on Gumøy, and on the inside of the old ferry port on Vestre Gumøy there is an anchorage that can be used if youre headed to “Signalen”. The taxi boats will also drop you off at the old ferry port if you wish. From the old ferry port at Vestre Gumøy there is an approx. 45min walk up to the Signal. If you are bringing children with you on the trip it would be wise to choose another path down that isn’t as steep, and therefore easier to walk.
