Brekkestø

Brekkestø was originally a temporary anchorage, also for sailing ships laid up for the winter. The story goes that in winter the ships lay so close to each other that you could cross the sound without getting your feet wet.

In the 18th century guesthouses appeared at Gaupholmen, on Ullerøya and in Brekkestø. There was also a distillery and here too was the pilot station with 8 pilots and 10 pilot apprentices.

After artists from Oslo discovered the paradise that Sørlandet was at the turn of the century, many small guesthouses were established.

This beauty spot is still very well preserved and is well worth a visit.
