Romantisk Rakhmaninov

‘A composer’s music should express his love affairs, his religion, the books that have influenced him, the pictures he loves.’ So said Rachmaninov, whose Third Symphony does just that.

Melancholy nearly overcame the composer in 1935. Then, on the shores of Lake Lucerne, he imagined the plush, lustrous sound of the great American symphony orchestras and was moved to write an irrepressible symphony of yearning and longing. In Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3, gentle reminiscences of a lost Russia gave way to impassioned, fighting spirit.

Principal guest conductor Sir Mark Elder returns to marshal this performance of Rachmaninov’s finely contoured symphony, after two works with Czech origins. World-leading violinist Leonidas Kavakos releases all the exuberance, virtuosity and gameplay in the meaty romp that is Bohuslav Martinů’s Violin Concerto No. 2, before which we hear Leoš Janáček’s dark and churning Jealousy – the original overture to his claustrophobic operatic masterpiece Jenůfa.

With Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
