Pumpegris play through the night with heavy tunes, rock-solid traditional dance pieces and honest lyrics, where vocalist Vera Sonne draws on everything from traditional vocal styles to rap — in other words, whatever captures the dancing drive of folk music at any given moment. In addition, Pumpegris draw inspiration from funk, shoegaze, singer-songwriter pop and hip-hop, approaching all these traditions with real weight. In this way, they bring folk music into something raw, close, dirty and groovy.
Fritids is Pumpegris’ debut album, produced by Tuva Syvertsen. Norwegian cultural heritage meets today’s youth; traditional tunes meet rap, fuzz guitar meets hymn tones. The contrast between vulnerability and humour runs throughout both the music and the lyrics. Pumpegris have arrived to spread Norwegian folk music through celebration and mischief, just as it originally emerged.
